The client

Emma McNally has written a number of children’s books.  “Who’s flying your plane?” is her first adult book. It is an introduction to the world of NLP (neuro-linguisitic Programming), designed to be accessible both to those who are just starting out on their NLP journey and also NLP professionals who wish to consolidate and deepen their understanding.

Emma uses language deliberately to have an effect on the reader on an unconscious level (the “linguistic” part of NLP!). She therefore wanted an editor who understood NLP. Having studied NLP at Master Practitioner level with Emma, I was able to recognise the deeper significance behind her words and ensure that her intention was maintained.

The challenge

The book is jam-packed full of useful theory, which includes lots of necessary technical jargon alongside everyday examples and anecdotes.  My challenge was to maintain Emma’s light-hearted, conversational tone of voice whilst ensuring clarity and flow for the reader, particularly those readers who might be reading about NLP for the first time.

In the foreword, the CEO and COO of the Association of NLP Professionals expressed Emma’s style beautifully:

“Such is the warmth and compassion of Emma’s language, it’s possible to believe she is in the room with you: talking to you, encouraging you, checking in, waiting for your (internal) positive response so she can move on to the next point.”

My goal was to preserve this throughout the editing process.

The solution

I edited the introduction in 3 different ways as a sample. Once Emma and I had discussed the pros and cons of each, I maintained this style throughout. I checked in with Emma after every chapter to ensure that she was happy.

The book launch was a fantastic event with speeches given by the CEO and COO of ANLP, myself and a selection of those whose lives have been positively impacted by Emma’s work.

“Every step Charlotte instilled confidence… letting me know the next steps, delivering within deadlines, being professional, approachable, and totally engaged and enthusiastic about our project.  Her flexibility and kindness throughout make her an absolute joy to work with and I would highly recommend her.” Emma McNally

Ideal for those starting their NLP journey and also a succinct reminder to those of us more experienced. A well structured book with helpful end of chapter summaries supplemented by practical activities that can be used immediately. This book is a must have for the curious at heart!

Emma has such a lovely way of explaining NLP concepts and models in a conversational fashion. As an NLP practitioner, I found myself understanding things at a deeper level. Thoroughly recommend this book

Loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. So easy to read and relate to. Totally a game-changer in life. A great introduction to NLP.

I loved so much about this book. Each chapter came with more advice, support and a summary. I found I wanted to practise the NLP techniques and activities straight away, some of which I have. I loved chapter 11 – talking about the importance of language and there are many, many more learnings throughout.
